Self-Talk: A Few Thoughts From Our President, Jeff Russell

A few weeks ago, I shared some thoughts around the concept of “You aren’t as good as they say you are.” So, this week, I wanted to share some thoughts more focused on how we do this within ourselves with negative (and positive) self-talk.

Here’s a quote that sums the concept up: “Whenever you get an impression of some pleasure, as with any impression, guard yourself from being carried away by it, let it await your action, give yourself a pause.” – Epictetus

This quote means that it’s great to feel good about yourself, but like with everything in life, it’s about balance. If we go down a path of being very pleased with ourselves – our looks, our performance, a job promotion, etc. – and we take it too far, it can have a negative result.

The same is true if we start telling ourselves how horrible we are at something. Instead of thinking of ways to do it better the next time, we have a pity party that gets us nowhere.

So, in the week ahead, be mindful of what you’re saying to yourself. Are your good thoughts about yourself filled with grace and kindness (they should be!)? Are your negative thoughts forward-thinking and reflective? If not, work on not walking around with a superior me walk, or a poor me walk. Find that balance (or blend).

Like with anything in life, it takes practice. But, once you get it, it sure does feel good. If you want to talk, call me.

Life is good. – Jeff
